The City

Berlin is the epitome of cool. Unique and raw with a hardy disposition, it’s a city like no other. Its streets and people are bursting with culture and attitude. Famed for its significant landmarks, artistic community, and outrageous nightlife it has something for everyone to love.

It’s a culturally diverse city unlike anywhere else. It relishes feeding the hedonistic nature of the local creatives it has lured in with its (formerly) cheap rents and progressive tendencies. For decades it has drawn to its enduring thriving centre artists, writers, and even musical superstars like David Bowie and Iggy Pop.

It’s been a city of two sides in more ways than one. Striking but beautiful, glamorous but gritty. As a result character beams from its graffiti covered walls and history defining streets. There aren’t many parts that don’t come cloaked in a story from another time. Nightclubs transform into trendy eateries, brothels morph into raves.

Although the low rents that once drew in the bohemian community are quickly rising and certain nightclubs are ultra-selective about who they admit – Berlins rich heritage and history should not be missed. There is much here to see, learn, love, and immerse yourself in. Berlin is a place to lose your inhibitions, literally, if you end up lost in the dark rooms of Berghain.

Once known in its darkest days as the headquarters of a fascist regime. It now proudly stands for all those things that regime stood against: progress, multiculturalism, and freedom.

The Food

Curried sausage? Döner Kebab? Weiner Schnitzel? Dishes that don’t exactly scream come one come all to vegetarians. But don’t let these popular Berlin favourites alarm you. By all means there is a lot of good eating for a veggie in these hipster streets.

Berlin made vegetarianism cool long before your local Greggs started dishing out vegan sausage rolls like they were going out of date.

A Michelin star vegetarian restaurant in a former nightclub at the end of a dirty alley? You just don’t get that anywhere else. Albeit you probably wouldn’t get away with it anywhere else.

There are new spots emphatically popping up all over to try. Classy brunch cafes with innovative offerings. Vegan burger joints that are out tasting their meat counterparts. Traditional meaty currywurst and döner kebabs sans meat.

It’s a veggie utopia. If you still need convincing take a look at the outstanding options in our ultimate vegetarian food guide to Berlin.

Brunch in Berlin

Cityscape of Berlin in the morning

Whether you’ve had a nice restful sleep at your Berlin hotel or are just getting out of Berghain in time for brunch. These spots will sort you out.

Father Carpenter 🌱 🍗

A well-located local brunch spot not far from Alexandra Palace and some of Berlins most important monuments. The menu gives a fresh and elegant twist to the expected brunch fare. Each classic dish has been dipped in a sparkle of sophisticated deliciousness with the addition of unusual creative ingredients. Such as habanero pesto on your avo toast or creamy peanut butter with their vegan banana bread.

It’s centrally located and a firm favourite which altogether means you might have to queue for this one. But it will be worth the wait.

Vöner 🌱

Who doesn’t want döner kebab for lunch? Especially the guilt free vegan kind that Vöner have been dishing out to the vegan community of Berlin for twenty plus years. Obviously their strips of flavoursome döner come with pita, wrap or chips covered in a sauce of your choice – all of which are homemade.

They’ve also concocted a delicious version of the classic currywurst that could easily be mistaken for the real deal. This is a favourite local spot that provides good value, good tasting vegan food. It’s a proper taste of Berlins favourites for us vegetarians to dive into.

Silo 🌱🍗

Silo Berlin prides itself on using local, quality ingredients. Quality which is unquestionably evident as you make your way through their delectable menu. There is a bit of everything depending on your mood. If you’d prefer traditional eggs on toast, their stellar option with farm fresh truffle mushrooms will easily satisfy you.

Or if it’s something sweet you’re after their divine baked pancakes might be the right option. Likewise you may not be in the mood for a standard brunch at all and their umami enriched soba salad is what you need for a savoury punch.

It’s a trendy spot deep in one of the most alternative neighbourhoods in one of the coolest cities in the world. Therefore you can expect a queue of hipsters waiting in line to be fed. No reservations, which basically means, be prepared to wait.

Some Other Spots Worth Shouting About…

A vegan- vegetarian, Israeli-Palestinian spot serving up unquestionably delicious food. They have whole brunch tasting menus for you to try a bit of everything. Or because there are just too many good options to possibly chose from yourself.

Authentic Russian food with some unusual offerings if you’ve never tried Russian cuisine before. They have a few spots across the city. Also, a great dinner option. But be sure to check opening hours as they vary.

Dinner in Berlin

Berlin lit up at night

Berlin nightlife is not for the faint-hearted. If you want to party like the locals you’ll need to set yourself up with a robust meal before getting swept into the early hours on a diet of hardcore techno and weissbier.

Cookies Cream 🌱 & Crackers 🌱🍗

Two separate offerings for you here, right around the corner from one another. Do you fancy some fine dining while in Berlin? Not just any kind of fine dining but the most Berlin fine dining you can experience. Cookies Cream is a renowned vegetarian restaurant in Berlin holding its own Michelin Star. In true Berlin style it’s an old nightclub repurposed into an infinitely cool restaurant serving outrageously delicious food from their set menu.

When the directions lead you down a very questionable alleyway. Keep going – you’re almost there.

Additionally, if you’re travelling with devout carnivores in your pack who would rather chew off their own arm than pay big bucks for veggie only food, despite how delicious it is, then you might want to try Crackers. Another brainchild of Cookies Cream owner, Crackers offers the same ostentatiously cool fine dining experience as Cookies Cream but caters to other diets with the added bonus of a DJ set while you feast. Altogether an excellent experience.

Standard Serious Pizza 🌱🍗

It doesn’t really matter where you are in the world. When that pizza craving hits, it hits hard. Luckily in Berlin the saucy, pillowy Neapolitan style pizzeria’s can be found across the breadth of the city.

Despite the competition our favourite is undoubtedly Standard Serious Pizza. It has an industrial vibe that might not make you want to hang around for drinks long after you’ve scooped up the last dripping of sweet marina sauce, but it will quash your pizza cravings with one salty slice. It’s floppy (as it should be) not overly crispy and crammed with tasty toppings. Pizza heaven.

Wen Cheng Handgezogene Nudeln 🌱🍗

Sometimes you don’t realise just how basic the noodles you’ve been slurping down your whole life are until you try the real deal. Wen Cheng Hand Pulled Noodles are the real deal. Thick, chewy, and drenched in salty satisfying toppings, they will change your noodle game for life.

Leave space for the bao bun if you can because it too is a perfectly balanced taste of heaven. And if you’re yet to try smashed cucumber then you’re surely in for a treat. We promise it will place the humble cucumber into a whole new light for you.

More Deliciousness If You’re Not Satisfied…

You’re in Berlin and it’s imperative to you that you get your hands on some traditional German cuisine. But you’re a vegetarian and veal schnitzel doesn’t exactly align with your moral compass. Look no further than Försters. Serving up the classics that will keep your compass straight.

Perhaps Berlins most popular burger joint. You’ll potentially find a queue at any of their locations. Just one veggie burger option but a solid list of toppings to make it your own. Plus, the cheese fries are excellent.

CHEAP EASY EATS (SWEET & SAVOURY)

Whether Kebab or Currywurst, Berliners love their street food. It’s a city ripe with cheap, easy eating options.

Vedang Burger 🌱

So good it almost made it to our Berlin vegetarian dinner guide but such speedy takeaway perfection it deserves star position on our cheap eats list. Locations all over Berlin, all vegan menu, all banging food. You won’t even remember the surname of that Ronald guy. Not to be missed. A Berlin vegetarian food guide top pick

Momos 🌱

An all-veggie dumpling spot. We love it when we can eat absolutely everything on the menu. Sign us up.

Brammibal’s Vegan Donuts 🌱

Vegan donuts. That means their healthy right? With these flavours and toppings, who cares? Worth eating regardless.

Rüyam Gemüse Kebap 🌱🍗

The outstanding reviews for all their locations say it all. Evidently these guys know what they’re doing. Essential eating in Berlin. Enough vegetarian and vegan options to wet your whistle.

Fine Bagels 🌱🍗

If you like cream cheese you will love Fine Bagels. They don’t hold back on the white stuff. Although not always a given at a bagel spot, they have a few delicious flavour combinations available for veggies. Don’t miss out on the chocolate babka either.

Curry 61 🌱

Not every currywurst spot in Berlin serves a vegan version but Curry 61 does. Conveniently near Museum Island. Go for the currywurst stay for the graffiti painting of Leonid Brezhnev and Erich Honecker’s embraced in a sausage kiss. An unmissable Berlin classic on our Berlin vegetarian food guide.

JONES Ice Cream

Finally on our list, if you’re lucky enough to catch some sunshine whilst in Berlin, make sure to cool down with Jones small batch ice creams and sorbets. Since it’s made fresh in Berlin with a constantly changing menu of unusual flavour combinations like black sesame and carrot cake they are a cut above the rest.
