Veganism for Everyone

Vegan restaurants, once rare hidden gems, are now ubiquitous in most major cities. Amsterdam Vegan restaurants are no different. The vegan takeover has exploded across the city just as it has across the rest of the world and we’re here for it.

As a vegan (or a vegetarian) there is a special kind of joy going to a restaurant and experiencing the novelty of choosing any dish on the menu. All without worrying about any hidden meat stocks, rennet cheeses, or bone gelatine that may have snuck into a seemingly innocuous dish on a badly labelled menu.

Vegan restaurant choices in Amsterdam may not be on the same scale as famous food cities such as London and New York but there are some local favourites here that would stand up against the biggest and best from those cities.

Of course, we only include the best options on MARVED and being vegan alone will not get you on our carefully curated list. The food must be top notch too. These restaurants are top of their game and ready for eating.

Vegan Sushi Bar

A restaurant with a name straight to the point, we like it. Just like it says on the door this is an all-vegan sushi restaurant and one of the absolute best vegan restaurants in Amsterdam. The sushi is unbelievably good.

Their signature rolls feature vegan versions of some of the most well-known meat and fish favourites. These aren’t like the squished, sad plastic boxed rolls you find in your local supermarket but fully stuffed and generously topped rolls that are drenched in flavour and possess an uncanny likeness to the real deal.

They make quite the entrance generously arranged on a large platter but manage to taste even better than they look. The Flambe Salmon is salty and soft with added crunch from the cucumber. The no chicken in the No Chicken Teriyaki is springy and textured enough to resemble the real thing. The spicy, sweet, umami hit makes each sushi platter feel like a complete and satisfying dish.

Hearth

Hearth is the vegan restaurant you go to when not only your body needs nurturing but your very soul. It’s a beautiful restaurant with stunning dishes that uniquely showcase the endless goodness of the humble plant-based diet. Simple vegetables cooked perfectly and served beaming with flavour.

Their rawvioli is a favourite. Don’t let its blood red appearance put you off – this is vegan heaven. Textured with chewy pasta and a smooth creamy filling. Their mains pull together ingredients your unlikely to come up with in your kitchen at home. Plus, falafel waffle is just fun to say.

Trevi's

Trevi’s vegan Italian is the perfect spot for vegans desperately missing their favourite pasta dishes and vegetarians who get tired asking if the cheese is veggie. It’s a cosy place, the restaurant has the atmosphere of being at a friend’s house for dinner or an intimate supper club. Small enough that you’ll want to try and book before showing up.

Their dishes are fresh and filled with flavour. The spaghetti and meatballs doused in Trevi’s own parmesan is a rustic ode to the classic. The ravioli tartufo is a modern wonder considering it is sans cream and this delicious.

Men Impossible

Men Impossible is delivering the impossible – glorious vegan ramen. This isn’t just any vegan ramen (which can sometimes taste like simple veggie stock and boiled veggies) but deeply flavourful noodle dishes aiming to be better than their meaty alternatives.

Centrally located in the Jordaan their yummy ramen is extremely popular, therefore, booking ahead of time to ensure a space on their long, communal table is essential. You’ll often find a sign outside advising hopeful customers they are fully booked for the day ahead.

On a menu of excellent options, we especially love their “sauce ramen” – where a deliciously creamy sauce replaces the soupy broth for a richer more luxurious dish. Also recommended are their katsu ramen toppers (special shout out to the vegan shrimp katsu). Plus, extra points for their self-service green tea available on each table.

Saint Jean Amsterdam

Vegans need bakeries. Everyone should know the strange joy of walking into a local bakehouse, scanning the tiers of freshly baked goods, and becoming crippled by the sheer quantity of choice.

Saint Jean Amsterdam has brought that untold joy (and pressure) to the vegans of Amsterdam. A plant-based bakery in the Joordan area it’s popular enough that you’ll likely find the queue to it before the bakery itself.

Their selection never falters in its offerings, but you’d be bonkers to go and not try a cruffin. Their pistachio cruffin is the stuff of legends. It’s unlikely you’ll be disappointed whatever you get. Unless it’s a seat you’re after… those are harder to come by in this beautiful, cosy cafe.

Vegan Junk Food Bar

An Amsterdam Icon. On the scene long before it was cool to be vegan and a popular place for vegans, vegetarians, and non-vegans alike. The type of vegan restaurant you bring the naysayers to. The rowdy ones who claim vegan junk food can never be as good as the carnivore’s junk food.

It’s an interesting venue, bright colours, loud music, and a lot of young alternatives make up the ambiance but it’s a place for anybody who likes good, guilt free food.

There are too many good dishes to name them all but don’t miss the nachos – their cheeze sauce is much better than any synthetic supposedly “real” cheese sauce. Plus, the toppings are equal parts zingy and spicy. The “fizz” is their version of fish and it’s one of the best attempts at the difficult to replicate consistency of our flaky friends we’ve ever eaten.

Meatless District

A local favourite on the Amsterdam Vegan scene, Meatless District is the place to visit when you’re craving a homely meal that’s been taken to the next level.

Their smoked no salmon bagel is excellently satisfying when you’ve spent years missing that flavourful smoky taste. The umami rich mushroom bourgignon is the perfect hearty dish in the depths of a cold Amsterdam winter.

If desserts are your favourite part of a meal, then you’ll be happy here. Their cheesecake and chocolate cake are house-made and you can taste the quality with every sugary bite.
