The 10 Best Places for Sandwiches in Amsterdam
Sandwiches in Amsterdam
Is there a more convenient food than the sandwich? You can hold it in one hand, no cutlery required, little mess, no need for a plate. It is certainly the easiest lunch choice when on the go. Especially if you’re on the hunt for sandwiches in Amsterdam because this city is loaded with great eat-in and takeaway sandwich options.
We’re not talking about the sad, small, soggy from too many tomatoes sandwiches you found shrink wrapped at the bottom of your school lunch box. The sandwich scene has changed a little since then and we’re all the better off because of it. Even the humble toasty has been taking to new levels by specialised cafes in Amsterdam.
Banh mi’s so flavourful you’ll forget you’re in the middle of mainland Europe. Focaccia so moist it’s as delicious as the fancy fillings it houses. Vegan döner so good you’ll wonder why carnivores bother with all the effort of the real thing. Amsterdam has a sandwich suited to any craving.
Once a canvas to add as much meat as possible, sandwich creators are finally making vegetarian sandwiches worth eating. These are some of the best in this sandwich loving city.

Your carnivorous friends will also find options here
Toastable 🌱 🍗
For anyone who is a fan of the endlessly versatile toasty then Toastable might just be your new favourite spot. Bread heaven with a whooping three slices to munch through. The fillings are excellent but it’s those pots of dip on the side that really add an extra flavour hit to these already great toasted sarnies.
Bakkerij Wolf 🍗
A fancier sandwich for the distinguished eater. Bakkerij Wolf is a restaurant with a takeout counter serving a bunch of well-baked treats. Including an excellent rotating lineup of sweet baked goods but even more impressive are their sandwiches. Fillings change but they never disappoint and the focaccia bread they are served on make their sandwiches crunchy, pillowy, messy perfection.
Chun Cafe 🌱 🍗
Do you like queuing? Do you love Instagram worthy sandwiches? If you answered yes to both these questions well, do we have the place for you. The egg salad and tofu puff at Chun Café are toasted sandwiches which are as beautiful to look at as they are to eat. The queue is so large it has its own management team, so yeah, you will need to be patient to get that coveted shot for the gram.
Flo's Appetizing 🌱 🍗
Amsterdam is no New York when it comes to Bagels. It’s one snack that is genuinely limited here. If you have a hankering for a soft, chewy NYC style bagel we urge you to avoid the heat at home style bagels in the supermarket and try the lovely Flo’s Appetizing instead. The bagels are cooked fresh every day and they even serve a veggie carrot style lox.
Broodje Popov 🌱 🍗
Ten years ago, a popular restaurant serving Vegan Döner and Vegan Tonkatsu sandwiches would have sounded like something out of an alternative universe. But here we are with Broodje Popov making your vegetarian multiverse a reality. Both options are saucy and delicious. You won’t feel like you’re missing out amongst all the meaty choices.
Small World Catering 🌱 🍗
Great sandwiches to have on the go if you’re rushing around central Amsterdam and need a pick me up. A bunch of options for veggies which are nutritious enough to not leave you feeling overly full afterward like some fake meat sandwiches (not a complaint just an observation).
Vinnies 🌱 🍗
Vinnies is a nice spot to sit in for a sandwich filled brunch, but they also offer many of their popular sandwiches on their takeout menu. Including the mashed avo with tomato – the dukkah here elevates this standard menu item to textured greatness. Their spicy kimchi with cheese and pickle is a savoury and luxurious treat.
Pita 🌱 🍗
Pita began in Foodhallen and has now expanded to the busy, more centrally located, Spui. Their falafel pita and halloumi or aubergine flatbreads are delicious. But it’s their selection of carefully considered flavourful sauces that really amplify their food to another level.
Anam Amsterdam 🌱 🍗
Sometimes all you need from a food establishment is one dish. One perfect menu item that hits the spot so completely you needn’t wish or ask for more. The tofu Bánh Mì Chay at Anam in De Pijp provides exactly that. It’s the only real veggie option on the menu but the vegan pate and Sa Te is flavourful enough to want nothing else.
Broodje Bert 🍗
If you’re hungry and low on cash Berts sandwiches are sure to fill you up for the whole day. Mostly standard sandwich fare: young & old cheese, egg mayo, mozzeralla & pesto. A favourite is the goat’s cheese with honey and walnut.
