The City

Barcelona might just be that one city that has it all. Fascinating architecture, rich history, quality food, abundant sightseeing, and, of course, THE BEACH. Not every city has quite so many opportunities for a good time on its doorstep.

It is perhaps most famous for its striking architecture that can be found all over as you amble through the city and above it in Park Güell. Undoubtedly you’ll discover endless evidence of the capabilities of humans to marvel at, none more so than La Sagrada Familia.

La Barceloneta is the city’s most well-known beach and is easily accessible by public transport from the centre. Its hot white sand, and warm Mediterranean waters are a welcome relief after a few days of bursting around the city trying to absorb all that culture.

Obviously you would be hard pushed to be disappointed with a Barcelona getaway. If you don’t like one item on the agenda, pick another! You’ll find something else to do and it will be a totally different experience. In any case you’ll usually experience it under the beautiful Spanish sunshine. What’s not to love?

The Food

Barcelona is a first-rate food city. Foodies worldwide flock here to gorge on the glorious inventions the Spanish alchemise from their sun-soaked produce.

Food is everywhere – from street markets where stools are pulled casually around stalls for customers, to the Bocadillo stacked up in bars and cafes ready to be devoured, and the usual Michelin leaning procession of eateries for the more discerning diner to purr over.

They are generally best loved for their abundant tapas restaurants which, yes, tend to be particularly heavy on meat and fish. However there will nearly always be something for the veggies: Patatas bravas, pan con tomate, croquettes – it can get pretty carby out here for a vegetarian. Indeed you might find yourself eating copious amounts of bread and cheese. But really there is no such thing as too much bread and too much cheese.

However there are a bunch of restaurants solely catering to vegetarians and vegans (which we love to see) and we’ve included some of these below. But in the strong likelihood that you’re travelling with some carnivores in your pack our Barcelona food guide offers restaurants that cater to those diets too specifically so that nobody will miss out on filling up on the city’s iconic treats. Hence our list is undoubtedly the definitive guide for your trip.

Some restaurants do tend to close between lunch and dinner. Also known as siestas. Therefore make sure to check opening times. You won’t want to miss anything on our Barcelona vegetarian food guide!

Brunch in Barcelona

Food worth getting out of bed for.

Brunch in the sun will set you up for a perfect day in Barcelona.

Citizen Café 🌱 🍗

An excellent lunch spot in Barcelona. Here you’ll find some more traditional leaning brunches like eggs benedict, avo on toast, and some exceptional pancake choices. But there are some unexpected options too that really make this place shine.

The fried green tomatoes are on their sharing menu, but we easily ate a bowl to ourselves (maybe that’s just us). Regardless of your appetite they will have something to satisfy you.

Additionally they also have a selection of burgers and sandwiches if you’re after something a bit more substantial.

Latº Café 🌱 🍗

The glowing reviews for this place are particularly well deserved. The food is the perfect combination of healthy and delicious. They specialise in ceviche, for which there is even a vegan option if you don’t want to miss out on a chance to try something different.

The pancakes come covered in a sweet yoghurt coulis or a milky lime sauce and are undoubtably not to be missed. Trust us – if you see a stack of them in a waitress’s hand as they pass by your longing eyes to another table you will live in perpetual regret at not ordering them.

Honest Greens Barcelona 🌱 🍗

A super popular place for lunch and rightly so because it will suit everybody in your party. Overall the menu has been curated with everyone in mind. Which basically means you won’t have to awkwardly ask what’s veggie or vegan here – they clearly care for all diets.

It’s an especially big, varied menu. We almost feel sorry for you having to choose but in truth we know the payoff will be totally worth it. There are a few sites around the city which make it easy to enjoy no matter where you stay.

Some Other Spots Worth Shouting About…

Another great lunch spot in the Eixample neighbourhood. Tons of choice and a cute atmosphere.

Daily changing vegetarian set menu but at a very affordable price. You are welcome.

Cerveseria Catalana 🍗

The menu is meat and fish heavy. There we told you upfront. But don’t let that put you off because there are vegetarian gems here that are worth digging for. Besides it’s one of the most well-known Tapa’s restaurants in Barcelona and we wouldn’t want you to miss out. Certainly not when it comes to food.

If you’re stuck, we suggest the “cabreaos” eggs – also known as angry eggs, unbelievably satisfyingly spicy and delicious. The fried hot peppers, creamy mushrooms, fried aubergine (if it’s in season) and pan con tomate. Certainly worth trying despite the carnivorous leaning menu.

Sensi Tapas 🌱🍗

We love a tapas restaurant but especially one with a dedicated vegetarian section on their menu. No Google Translate app required. They even have options for vegans. The menu isn’t huge, so you’ll probably want to eat all of it (just us?). Equally it’s more than enough for a delicious and varied meal.

It’s located smack bang in the tourist centric Gothic Quarter which means it can get busy. Not to worry though as they let you reserve tables!

Teresa Carles 🌱

Seen enough sliced meat and fried fish to last you a lifetime? Also need a break from working out what is vegetarian and what is most definitely not vegetarian? Then Teresa Carles might just be the place for you. An essential pick for our Barcelona vegetarian food guide.

A hugely impressive vegetarian menu with lots of vegan options. This could be your best meal in Barcelona. We must admit, from time to time, it feels nice to be fully looked after as a vegetarian or a vegan.

More Deliciousness If You’re Not Satisfied…

Feeling fancy? Want to spend an evening in the stars? Michelin Star that is. Try Caelis for a special occasion or if you just like to go all out on your holidays. Of course they offer a vegetarian set menu.

Billed as “Veggies for Non Veggies,” we’re pretty sure actual veggies are allowed to eat here too. The restaurant itself is drop dead gorgeous, as is the food.

CHEAP EASY EATS (SWEET & SAVOURY)

For when you want something cheap and easy.

This city really does have it all.

Da Nanni Pizzeria 🌱🍗

Italian food a quick twenty-minute walk from Barceloneta. Who doesn’t fancy some pizza after a day at the beach?

Churrería Laietana

Authentic, good value churros. An admirable start to any day.

OGGI Gelato Barcelona 🌱

Too hot from long walks taking in everything Barcelona has to offer? Then it’s emphatically important to cool down with some tasty gelato.

Baluard Barceloneta 🌱 🍗

A bakery dotted across Barcelona much like the fruit in their popular fruit and nut bread. Another nice and easy option for food on the go.

Mercado de La Boqueria 🌱 🍗

Finally on our list – love the smells, sounds, and buzz of a city market? Pull up a pew and taste some local produce.
