For the Love of Pizza

Pizza is the best. May every person reading this know – we love it, we eat it often, we cannot get enough of it. But as much as we love it we don’t love all of it. Because not all pizzas are created equal.

As such this isn’t a list of every single pizza place in the city crammed into one painfully over-elaborate list of underwhelming pizza. This is a carefully curated list of the best in Amsterdam Pizza. If you’re serious about pizza, and we reckon you should be, then this is the list, and these are the pizza gems for you.

True Italian Pizza in Amsterdam

Even though it’s based on just three simple ingredients. Pizza keeps getting better. Or perhaps it’s not getting better per se, but better pizza itself is becoming more available. It has always been excellent and abundant in Italy but now you can find exceptional Italian pizza in countless unexpected corners of the world. Thankfully finding its way to the rest of the world and thus our greedy hands.

Of course, we’re not suggesting that the best pizza places in the world are anywhere but its birthplace. But, we can all agree, it’s only a great thing that quality Italian pizza is accessible in as many places as possible. One city that has benefited greatly from the continued expansion of this impossibly perfect food group is the Dutch capital, Amsterdam.

Pizza isn’t exactly a newcomer on the food scene and ultimately pizza in Amsterdam has long been available. But the quantity of Italian level quality pizza spots that have popped up is new and something worth celebrating (with more pizza).

Every restaurant on our list serves up mouth-watering, life affirming pizza. Each come with their own vibe and style. Choose the ideal spot depending on your mood, your group, your after-pizza activities – whatever it may be. All with the knowledge that you’re sure to eat the best in Amsterdam Pizza.

Pizzeria Dope 🌱 🍗

An Amsterdam pizzeria favourite. Pizzeria Dope is a superb pizza spot in the trendy De Pijp neighbourhood. You’ll find a ton of different, creative, vegetarian pizza options to indulge in. It is a permanently busy spot and bookings are recommended. It’s also not somewhere to visit if you’re in a hurry. You’ll want to relax over a few drinks here while you let those pizza artisans diligently create your pizza.

In their own words Pizzeria Dope is ‘gourmet’ pizza and is served bubbling straight from a wood fired oven. The dough is soft, chewy heaven. The ingredients fresh, flavoursome, and well distributed. We especially love a pizza whose stretched dough puffs gratifyingly over the edges of the plate attempting to contain it.

nNea Pizza 🌱 🍗

Touted as one of the best pizza places in Europe (outside of Italy obviously). Amsterdammers most definitely agree considering how difficult it is to nab a table at this spot. It’s not just worth booking a table here but essential and, not to mention, worth doing well in advance. We’re talking weeks – months if you want a weekend pizza.

nNea beautifully combines the traditions of their home of Italy and the seasonal ingredients of the Netherlands. Cultivating in vibrantly fresh pizza with well-thought-out toppings. They take extra pride in their dough which they describe as a “ongoing research, a never-ending journey that begins with grains.” Even amongst those glorious toppings their dough does stand strong on its own. A perfectly salted, pillowy, floppy base. The ultimate launching pad for further greatness.

L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele 🌱 🍗

If you’re a self-proclaimed pizza enthusiast and life is nothing more than one unending quest to find the best pizza in the world. Then it’s likely on your travels you will have come across L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele. One of the oldest pizza spots in Naples (the origin of pizza) and considered by many to be the best pizza in the world. Already famous to those familiar with these things it became mainstream after the release of the bestselling novel/ film Eat, Pray, Love.

The da Michele brand now has locations across the world and at the Amsterdam restaurant they offer a large, varied menu. Unlike the two solitary choices they are famous for in their original Naples restaurant. Although we adore the pure and simple excellence of their Marinara and Margherita, we certainly aren’t upset at their additional Amsterdam offerings. Including a pie adorned with truffles and another with salted roasted aubergine. Not to mention the pizzas themselves are huge! Predictably it’s very popular, and with no reservations possible you may need to queue. But a bustling, energetic, fun vibe awaits you inside.

Porchetteria 🍗

Perfect Italian pizza made by Italians (always a good sign at a pizza place). Definitely not the place to visit if you want the white tablecloths and red carpet rolled out. However if you’re a pizza evangelist and enjoy a rustic, unpretentious, speedy feast then it’s a must try.

The pizza is beyond flavourful. We aren’t sure exactly how they can stretch that much flavour from the same base ingredients the rest of the world use, but they do. The sauce is a highlight – a sweet salty hit which is topped perfectly proportionate against the base. Their rectangular shaped pies allow just enough blank edges to enjoy their high-quality crust with its satisfying crunch. So perfect and delicious you will likely want more than one. A case study on the importance of quality ingredients.
